Shasta County COVID updates: 23 more cases reported — total of 1,839 since start of pandemic

Original story: Another 23 Shasta County residents have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the county's total to 1,839 since the pandemic began, health officials announced Thursday. 

Of that total, 151 cases are active. Eight people are hospitalized, including three in the intensive care unit. The number of deaths remains at 30.  

The latest cases reported Thursday were found in 12 men and 11 women, according to the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency. Here's how they break down by age:

  • 4 children under age 13 
  • 3 teenagers 
  • 3 people in their 20s 
  • 3 people in their 30s 
  • 2 people in their 40s 
  • 6 people in their 50s 
  • 1 person in their 60s 
  • 1 person in their 80s

Officials with HHSA continue to ask residents showing symptoms of COVID-19 to stay home and isolate from others. 

"If you are a close contact of a person who has COVID-19, please stay home for 14 days from your last contact with that person, except to receive medical care and to get tested," officials wrote in a news release.

Shasta County has had the highest new case rate in California for three weeks in a row, according to data posted to the state's reopening blueprint online. 

The county has a case fatality rate of 1.63% — meaning a little under two county residents die for every 100 who test positive for the virus.
