LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Lawrence County Drug Task Force agents arrested Keith Mayo and Michelle Robbins Smith after they discovered an active meth lab, marijuana, finished methamphetamine and several items used to consume narcotics inside their motel room at the Days Inn in Moulton.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell said that the arrests come after a month long investigation into possible illegal drug activity.

He says during the the investigation, agents learned that the two had been purchasing suspicious quantities of pseudoephedrine, which is the key ingredient used in meth manufacturing.

Mitchell says agents conducted surveillance on the two offenders, which lead them to their motel room at the Days Inn Motel.

Agents say they immediately detected the odor of an active meth lab when they approached the room, and when they entered the room they found Mayo inside the bathroom holding an active one-pot-cook style meth lab.

Sheriff Mitchell says agents immediately arrested Mayo and Smith and had everyone evacuate the room due to the strong chemical odor.

The Moulton Fire Department was also called to the scene to help assist in ventilating the area.

Mitchell says an additional search of the room revealed finished product meth, additional items associated with meth manufacturing, as well as marijuana and items used to consume narcotics.

A DEA Contract Clean-up crew had to be called to the scene to properly dispose of the meth lab and other hazardous materials.

Mayo and Smith were both taken to the Lawrence County Jail where they are both currently being held without bond.
