The mandatory evacuation zone for the Caldor Fire has been extended into the Lake Tahoe Basin and Alpine and Amador counties.

Evacuation orders issued Sunday afternoon specified that El Dorado County residents should use eastbound Highway 50 or northbound Highway 89, and Alpine County residents should go west on Highway 88 to northbound Highway 89.

The orders reflected the expansion of the fire on its east edge, toward Twin Bridges on Highway 50 and Kirkwood on Highway 88.

The Highway 50 closure has been extended east to Sawmill Road, near the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Highway 88 is closed between Omo Ranch Road and Highway 89.

The fire was estimated at 156,515 acres (244 square miles) on Sunday morning, with containment at 19% — an increase of 7,000 acres from the previous morning.

All of Eldorado National Forest has been closed to the public through Sept. 30. Many other parks and recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe area are closed at least through Labor Day because of the fire.

The map above shows the mandatory evacuation area in orange. For latest updates, including warning zones, check the Facebook page of Eldorado National Forest or the county sheriffs, or see the official county map below.

The fire started on Aug. 14 near the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River about three miles south of Grizzly Flats. Its cause is under investigation.
