Q: I am 58 and have moles appearing on my face. I’m worried they make me look older than I am. Could laser treatment or anything else get rid of them?
A: I've seen some terrifying online ads promoting at-home mole removal ‘pens’ and creams.
They could make people think any moles can just be zapped with a laser or an ointment and that is extremely dangerous, so please don’t be taken in by these claims.
Skin cancer specialist Marko Lens urges you to have every single mole on your face assessed by a dermatologist first.
An anonymous 58-year-old reader asked for advice on reducing the appearance of moles on her face (file image)
Some may be age spots, which can indeed be removed easily with an Erbium laser that burns off pigmented cells.
Some may be pre-cancerous lesions, which could be activated by laser and should be left alone.
And some may be regular moles, which Mr Lens does not recommend removing for purely cosmetic reasons, especially if you have several.
A portion of any mole grows underneath the skin, which means that removal (by cutting out or shaving the mole) can cause scarring or discolouration in an area larger than the mole itself.
You could consider having one or two removed that especially bother you, but please do it under the supervision of a dermatologist.
Costs vary considerably, but expect to pay no less than £400.
