Fort Worth Opera’s ‘Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World’

North Texans are invited to the world premiere of their musical adaptation, which will be sung in English by local performers. Set in Mexico City, the story follows a young girl named Marianna who visits renowned painter Frida Kahlo in her famous Blue House. Puppets representing Kahlo’s parrot, dog and monkey sing, and her husband, Diego Rivera, relates moments from her life. Inspired by author and illustrator Laurence Anholt’s artwork, the stage design aims to draw audiences into this story about “art, bravery and the power of friendship.”

‘Four Days in November’ at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

Established to preserve the history and local memories of President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 assassination, The Sixth Floor Museum will honor the 56th anniversary of his death with four special programs. The series begins Nov. 19 with a conversation with Ruth Paine, an Irving homeowner who allowed Lee Harvey Oswald’s family to stay with her. She will reflect on how she was “thrust overnight into the center of an international tragedy” when it was revealed that Oswald had, without her knowledge, stashed the rifle he used in her garage.

On Nov. 20, clinical psychologist Dr. Gene Riddle will discuss his study of Oswald’s psychological makeup, and on Nov. 21, Three Hours in Dallas, Jesus Martinez’s “original musical composition scored to accompany an all-new compilation of historic motorcade film footage,” will debut. The series ends on Nov. 22 with a free “Living History” talk with Texas Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster Bill Mercer followed by a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m.

‘Drumline Live Holiday Spectacular’

The holiday season hardly needs a pep rally, but that’s precisely what makes this foot-stomping sensation stand out as proof that, with a little encouragement, Dallas-Fort Worth could be even more amped up for Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. Styled after historically black university marching bands, this touring troupe performs classic carols and melodies mixed with hip-hop beats and gospel, jazz, soul and Motown rhythms. “Dazzling vocalists and talented musicians, coupled with energetic choreography, spectacular lighting and beautiful holiday costumes” put a thrilling spin on traditional holiday programming.

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Live

Many may wonder why they weren’t the first to think of a television show where robots lampoon a movie that’s so bad it’s good, but that title goes to Joel Hodgson, creator and original host of cult favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000. Retiring from live performances at the culmination of this tour, Hodgson will offer savage one-liners alongside his bot companions Tom Servo, Crow and Gypsy during the 1986 martial arts film No Retreat, No Surrender. The gloriously cheesy flick features a character called “Bruce Lee’s ghost” and stars a villainous young Jean-Claude Van Damme.
