Man in serious condition after being shot by Maine State Police trooper during armed confrontation

A Maine State Police trooper shot and seriously wounded a man Tuesday night in Thorndike, Maine, after an armed confrontation outside the man’s home, police said.

Eric Fitzpatrick, 33, of Thorndike, was shot twice by Maine State Police Trooper Thomas Bureau at around 11 p.m. Tuesday at 108 Ward Hill Road, Maine State Police said in a statement. Fitzpatrick was armed at the time, Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

The shooting occurred when troopers were called to the house for a neighborhood disturbance “which evolved into a domestic incident between Fitzpatrick and his girlfriend,” police said.

Fitzpatrick was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast before being airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Fitzpatrick is in serious condition, McCausland said Wednesday morning. Fitzpatrick’s girlfriend was not injured, he said.

Bureau, who has been with the Maine State Police for seven years, was not injured in the confrontation. He has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the incident is reviewed by State Police and the Maine attorney general’s office. This is standard protocol in Maine following a officer-involved shooting, McCausland said.

The details of the shooting will not be released until the investigators from the attorney general’s office complete their review and release a report on the incident, McCausland said.
