SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Coming into their game with Shenendehowa on Wednesday night, the Blue Streaks knew they had their work cut out for them. With the Plainsmen coming off of a tough shootout loss to Burnt Hills on Monday night, they were more motivated than ever to prove what they’re capable of.
“We were really connecting on our passes today. That really helped us because we were struggling to communicate and pass to each other on Monday,” said Shen’s Lauren Shanahan.
Shen defeated Saratoga in a blowout of 8-0. After getting out to an early lead, the Shen offense was simply too much for Saratoga.
Nicolette Morlock got Shen started with their first goal and then Shanahan put in the second for a quick 2-0 lead. Julie Kuzmich added on a third. All three goals in the first quarter were assisted by Kendall Eggleston.
“Our loss to Burnt Hills definitely hardened us and we were able to come back today and play really well,” Shanahan said. “We were able to convert on our corners, something that we usually struggle win. We had a chip on our back today and that helped to create a really positive attitude and that really contributed to an overall great team win.”
One of the changes in environment for Shen on Wednesday night was taking a team bus to the game, instead of driving individually, which is what they did on Monday.
“It definitely feels more like normal, being able to take the bus and all of us being able to be together before the game and play music and get ready for the game together. I think that really helped us today. It made us feel more like a team and be able to talk to each other the whole time.”
Haylie Satterlee scored for Shen in the second quarter and then, as time expired, the Plainsmen successfully put in a goal off a corner to finish the half, off the stick of Nicolette Morlock.
“This is definitely a step in the right direction. We have some big games coming up and today being able to have a strong start and continue to push forward through the whole game was really good for us,” Shanahan said.
Kuzmich added a goal in the third period, with Satterlee and Kelly Westervelt scoring in the fourth.
Shen improves to 3-1 with the win, while Saratoga drops to 2-2.
