Ida Jay S. Slaughter, 87, died on Monday, Jan, 10, 2005, after a long-term illness. She had lived with her younger daughter before she went to be with the Lord.
She was a native of Jonesboro, Clayton County, GA. She was a participant at Alexian Brothers Community Service for the Elderly.
In her early years she joined Shiloh Methodist Church of Lovejoy, GA. After moving to Chattanooga in 1949, she later reunited with the Lord and joined Gospel Lighthouse Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board until her health failed in 1983.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Slaughter; grandson, Terry Tyron S. Bolton; four sisters, Iness Sewell, Eula Mae Sewell, Lottie Martin and Maggie Mae Slaughter; two brothers, George Henry Sewell and Lewis Sewell; and parents, John Henry and Maggie Mae Sewell.
She was a mother and grandmother of several government servicemen and women with the Army, Navy, Air Force and reserves.
She is survived by five daughters, Thelma Jean Slaughter, Alfredea Brown, Doris Mae Hewlett, Mary Yvette Young and Virginia Slaughter; three sons, Harvey and Jimmie Williams and Tommy Joe Slaughter, of Virginia Beach, VA; daughter-in-law, Karen Slaughter; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law, not all of Chattanooga and Atlanta; and other relatives of Atlanta, Fayetteville, GA, New York, NY, and Cleveland, OH.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, in the McCallie Avenue Chapel with the Rev. Richard Hewlett officiating.
Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.
