HS Volleyball update: Mountain Brook wins Margaret Blalock Tournament title

Mountain Brook won nine straight matches last week, including taking the title of Homewood’s Margaret Blalock Tournament.

The Class 7A second-ranked Spartans (50-7) earned impressive wins over top-ranked McGill-Toolen in the tournament semifinal then beat third-ranked Hoover for the championship. It was the second win over Hoover last week after the Spartans also beat the Bucs in regular season play.

Mountain Brook also beat Hewitt-Trussville in regular season play before winning seven straight to take the Blalock title.

Mountain Brook beat Madison Academy, Ramsey, Grissom, Thompson, Vestavia Hills in quarterfinal play before downing McGill-Toolen and Hoover.

Grace Carr led the Spartans with 96 kills for the week, adding 87 digs, seven aces and three blocks.

Celie Field had 43 kills, 65 digs, 15 aces and six blocks while Liz Vandevelde had 116 digs and Mary Katherine Fowlkes had 49 kills and three blocks.

Ann Vandevelde set up the front line with 192 assists, adding 62 digs and five blocks.

Class 7A

Top-ranked McGill-Toolen (30-8) was 5-1 last week with a regular season win over Baker then beating Bob Jones, Tuscaloosa County, Spain Park, Daphne and Hazel Green before falling to Mountain Brook in semifinal play at the Margaret Blalock tournament.

Katie Hemphill had 92 digs for the week while Amelia Boykin had 132 assists, and Imani Nicholson had 11 aces, 57 kills, three blocks and 25 digs.

Third-ranked Hoover (29-13) was 6-2 last week with a regular season loss to Mountain Brook before beating Hazel Green, John Carroll, Huntsville, Homewood and Bob Jones in the Margaret Blalock Tournament. The Bucs lost to Mountain Brook in the tournament championship.

Gabbi Essix had 64 kills for the week while Laurel Burkhardt had five aces and 52 digs and 28 kills.

Fourth-ranked Bob Jones (27-12) was 3-2 with wins over Spain Park, Daphne and Tuscaloosa County, and losses to McGill-Toolen and Hoover.

Lauren Lyons had 28 kills and 27 digs, Michelle Davis had 34 digs and four aces, and Maddie Sinn had 41 assists, four aces and 13 digs.

Fifth-ranked Sparkman (32-13) was 4-3 with a regular season win over Gadsden City and beating Vestavia Hills, Parker and Grissom in the Blalock Tournament while losing to Bayside Academy, Auburn and Spain Park.

Jasmine Brooks had 55 kills and 47 digs, Madison Raybon had 37 kills and 20 digs, and Kinsey Sivley had 64 assists and 33 digs.

Ninth-ranked Grissom (25-16) was 2-3 in the Margaret Blalock tournament, beating Madison Academy and Ramsay, and losing to Thompson, Mountain Brook and Sparkman.

Amber Askew had 81 assists, surpassing 1,000 career assists, adding 18 digs during the tournament while Caitlin Torok had 29 kills and 11 blocks.

No. 10 Oak Mountain (28-12) swept Northridge and Tuscaloosa county as Jayni Thompson had 15 kills and three blocks, Zoe Atkinson had 16 kills, two blocks and seven aces, and Avery Fletcher had 10 aces and 30 assists.

Class 6A

Second-ranked Spanish Fort (55-6) won 10 matches last week, including capturing the Gulf Shores Shrimp Fest Tournament, beating Daphne, Buckhorn, Hartselle, Curry, Lawrence County, Guntersville, St. Luke’s, Buckhorn, St. Pauls and Hartselle for the title.

Kayla Keshock had 202 assists, 36 digs, 13 kills, 13 blocks and 17 aces for the week while Meg Brackhan had 124 digs and a 2.4 passing score, Avery Rodgers had 95 kills, 50 digs, 15 blocks and eight aces, Kamble Frenette had 55 kills, 82 digs, 18 aces and eight blocks, and Mya Barnes had 43 kills, 30 blocks, 17 digs and seven aces.

Third-ranked Hartselle (54-9) was 7-2 last week, beating Buckhorn, Carbon Hill, Providence Christian, Murphy, Lawrence County, Mary Montgomery and Gulf Shores, and two losses to Spanish Fort to finish second in Gulf Shores' Shrimp Fest tournament.

Hailey Holshouser had 54 kills, 98 digs and 11 aces, Lillyanna Cartee had 56 kills, 83 digs and five blocks, and Grace Leighton had 172 assists, 48 digs and 10 aces.

Fourth-ranked Chelsea (45-3) was 3-1 with wins over Brewbaker Tech, John Carroll and Tuscaloosa County, and a loss to Jasper.

Bailey Drew McIntyre had 93 assists and 21 digs, Victoria Schmer had 51 digs, Amaya Rudolph had 37 kills, Zoe LaBreche had 31 kills and Hope Wright had 31 kills and 22 digs.

Fifth-ranked Buckhorn (41-16) was 5-3 last week with wins over Foley, Murphy, St. Luke's, Alma Bryant and Pelham, and losses to Hartselle and Spanish Fort twice in the Shrimp Fest Tournament.

Stephanie Sharp had 140 assists, 32 digs, 15 aces and five blocks, Sidney Peterson had 50 kills and 17 blocks, and Anna Grace Davis had 90 digs.

Seventh-ranked Albertville (33-10) was 4-3 last week with regular season wins over Boaz and Springville, and beating Corner and Fairhope in the Shrimp Fest Tournament. The Aggies lost to Houston Academy, Gulf Shores and Faith Academy in the tournament.

Jayden Watkins had 38 kills and 12 blocks, Anna Waldrop had 68 assists and eight aces, Grace Kelley had 17 digs and eight aces, and Journey Oden had 32 kills and 20 blocks.

Eighth-ranked Northridge (26-12) was 2-1 with wins over Fayette County and Oakman, and a loss to Oak Mountain.

Mary Morgan Formby had 31 kills, Charley Drain had 63 assists and 13 aces, and Taylor Bentley had 14 kills.

Ninth-ranked St Paul’s (26-11) was 7-1 last week with wins over Saraland, B.C. Rain, UMS-Wright, Mississippi's Our Lady Academy twice, Fairhope and Saraland with two losses to Spanish Fort.

Carli Rouse had 47 kills and 68 digs for the week while Libby Kirby had 48 kills and 57 digs, and Baylie Crim had six aces, 154 assists and 36 digs.

No. 10 Saraland (27-11) was 4-3 last week with a regular season win over Cottage Hill then wins against Carbon Hill, Guntersville and Fairhope in Gulf Shores' Shrimp Fest tournament and losses to St Paul’s, Alabama Christian and St Luke's.

Mandi Hart had 93 assists, 10 aces and 34 digs for the week, Kaila Sisk had 49 kills and 13 blocks, Jade Hollins had 64 assists and 14 aces, and Taylor Lewis had 27 kills and 45 digs.

Athens (27-17) was 8-1 last week with wins over Decatur, Brooks twice, James Clemens, Central-Florence twice, Ardmore and Lindsay Lane while losing to Jasper in the championship of its own Athens Invitational.

Alli Williams had 95 kills and five blocks, Cali Persaud had 19 aces, 13 blocks and 165 assists, Elli Jarrett had 11 aces and 79 digs, Jillian Vickers had 12 blocks, and Meg Jarrett had 29 kills and 56 digs.

Brookwood (17-10) beat Hueytown and Northside as Jessica Cross had 18 kills and Alyssa Barger had 12 digs.

Gardendale (24-12) beat McAdory as Merritt Beason had 17 kills, nine digs and three aces, and Christyn Banks had 12 digs.

Muscle Shoals (31-15) won seven matches last week, beating Cullman, West Morgan, Wilson, East Limestone, Colbert Heights, Cherokee and Deshler.

Kailey Armstrong had 61 kills, 43 digs and 13 aces while Jessica Godsey had 68 assists, 35 digs and 16 aces, and Amber Grace Hulsey had 46 digs.

Class 5A

Top-ranked Jasper (53-8) won 10 straight matches last week — the Vikings have won 19 straight — beating Tuscaloosa County, Chelsea, Cullman and Hazel Green in regular season play then beating Elkmont, Lindsay Lane, James Clemens, Hatton and host Athens to take the Athens Invitational title.

McKinley Ferguson had 14 aces, 41 kills, nine blocks and 10 digs in the tournament while Alex Oliver had seven aces, 21 kills, six blocks and 20 digs, Jordan Gilbert had 24 kills and 28 blocks, and Temperance Chatman had 90 assists.

Sixth-ranked Faith Academy (35-9) was 8-1 last week with regular season wins over Lawrence County and Guntersville then winning the Silver Bracket at the Shrimp Fest Tournament, beating Pelham twice, Corner, UMS-Wright, Albertville and St. Luke’s. The Rams lost to Mary Montgomery in the tournament.

Aaliyah Austin had 66 kills, 17 blocks and seven aces, Brinkley Hearn had 83 assists, 44 digs, 34 kills, 10 aces and six blocks, Kristen Mitternight had 81 digs and 44 assists, and Sarah Phillips had 77 assists and 31 digs.

Ninth-ranked Mortimer Jordan (33-9) beat Ramsay as Reese Colburn had 10 kills, a block and ace, Madeline Snow had six kills and three blocks, Emma Chumley had 11 assists, and Haylee Roberts had 10 assists and seven digs.

St. James (10-22) was 2-2 with wins over Alabama Christian and Beauregard, and losses to Auburn and Harris County (Ga.).

Danielle Greene had 12 kills and seven blocks, Merrily Capouya had six aces, 19 kills and 42 digs, and Morgan Parish had six aces, 11 kills and 40 digs.

Class 4A

Top-ranked Bayside Academy (42-9) was 7-1 last week with wins over UMS-Wright St. Micheal, Sparkman, Parker, Vestavia Hills, Auburn and Thomson with a loss to Hoover in semifinal play of Homewood's Blalock tournament.

Jacque Martin had six aces, 77 kills and 41 digs while Ella Broadhead 53 kills and five aces, Emily Buhl had 48 kills and 19 aces, and Luci Wilkinson had 113 digs and 25 aces.

Second-ranked Providence Christian (33-10) was 3-3 with wins over Carbon Hill, Curry and Houston Academy, and losses to Chiles (Fla.), Hartselle and Gulf Shores.

Autumn Mayes had 11 aces, 85 kills and 78 digs, Adleigh Mayes had seven aces, 133 assists and 29 digs.

Fifth-ranked Curry (46-11) was 4-5 last week with wins over Haleyville, Fayette, Cordova and Sumiton Christian, and losses to Spanish Fort, Lawrence County, Houston Academy, Providence Christian and Guntersville.

Grayson Evans had 95 kills, 46 digs and 14 aces for the week while Rae Ann Hall had 41 kills and 28 digs, Alayna Key had 46 digs, Khloe Kimbrell had 139 assists and 14 aces, and Allie Downs had 64 assists and 31 kills.

Sixth-ranked St. John Paul II (12-21) beat Danville as Marissa Koch had 24 kills and 11 digs, Riley Edger had 35 assists, seven digs and seven aces, and Kameron Brazille had 12 digs and three aces.

Central Florence (35-24) was 5-3 last week with a win over James Clemens and losses to Lawrence County and Athens in regular season play then beating East Limestone, Haleyville, Hatton and James Clemens in the Athens Invitational and losing to Athens in semifinal play.

Laura Lee Keener had 89 digs and 14 aces, Kenzie Shinault had 53 kills and 10 blocks, and Ann Margaret Keener had 180 assists, nine aces and 53 digs.

Class 3A

Top-ranked Montgomery Academy (32-5) beat Prattville and Montgomery Catholic as Millie Stevenson had 89 assists, 18 digs and 13 kills, Mary Gray Turner had 22 kills and 12 digs, Anaya Thomas had 20 kills, Ann Cobern Chapman had 19 kills and six blocks, and Grace Jackson had 34 digs.

Second-ranked St. Luke’s (30-7) was 4-3 with wins over Murphy, Guntersville, Lawrence County and Saraland, and losses to Buckhorn, Spanish Fort and Faith Academy in the Shrimp Fest Sliver Bracket final.

Gracie Sims had 97 kills and 77 digs, Haley Patterson had 91 kills, 14 blocks and 46 digs, and Grace Garrett had 231 assists, 56 digs and 14 kills.

Sixth-ranked 3A Carbon (27-20) was 3-5 last week with regular season wins over Cordova and Lamar County and a loss to Winston County in regular season play. The Bulldogs beat Alabama Christian at Gulf Shores' Shrimp Fest while losing to Hartselle, Providence Christian, Mississippi's Our Lady Academy and Saraland.

Sam Norris had 55 kills, 87 digs and five aces, Hannah Dutton had 41 kills, 90 digs and six aces, and Ivie Gibbons had 145 assists and 36 digs.

No. 10 Prattville Christian Academy (22-12) beat Montgomery Catholic and lost to Pike Road.

Lennon McAnnally had 21 kills, 13 digs and two aces, Juliana Lawrence had 18 assists, 17 digs and two aces, Hannah Jones had 11 kills and five blocks

Class 2A

Fifth-ranked Sand Rock (31-9) won six matches last week, including earning the title of the Glencoe Invitational. The Wildcats beat Cedar Bluff in regular season play then beat Spring Garden, Sacred Heart, Fairview twice and Cedar Bluff for the title.

Mattie Brown had 21 blocks and 16 kills for the week, Hannah Davis had 52 kills and 72 digs, and Caley Garrett had 89 digs.

Ninth-ranked Decatur Heritage (27-25) won four matches, beating Colbert County twice, Sheffield and R.A. Hubbard as Elizabeth Wilson had 36 kills 12 blocks, and Abby Terry had 38 digs and 14 aces.
