Palm Springs International
Film Festival
Coming in the midst of Hollywood’s movie awards season, the first major film festival of the year has become an important stop in the lead-up to the Academy Awards. Screenings focus on world cinema and the festival regularly showcases all of the pictures under consideration for the foreign-language film Oscar. Related events include the Palm Springs International Film Awards gala on Jan. 2 and 10 Directors to Watch on Jan. 3-4. This year’s honorees include Casey Affleck, Annette Bening, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman.

Oshogatsu Family Festival
Ring in the Year of the Rooster with New Year-themed performances and crafts. Featured activities include demonstrations of the ancient art of candy sculpting, sample bowls of lucky zaru soba for kids, a performance by Los Angeles-based TAIKOPROJECT, and a mochitsuki (rice pounding) demonstration.

Off Center Festival
Featuring creative, contemporary and sometimes controversial artists and shows, the annual festival at Segerstrom Center for the Arts presents Keith A. Wallace in “Bitter Game,” Mariachi Flor de Toloache, Marga Gomez in “Latin Standards,” Belarus Free Theatre in “Time of Women,” Choir! Choir! Choir! and Justin Vivian Bond in “Justin Vivian Bond Shows Up.”

Asian-American Expo
Founded in 1982, the event has grown to become the largest Asian-themed event in the country and has more than 1,000 vendors presenting in six exhibition halls. Be sure to look for Anime Impulse, a project that fuses Anime and Video games. Also, there are eight performance stations and three food courts.

Winter Wine Classic
Masters of winemaking from the likes of Ahnfeldt, Beckmen Vineyards, Tablas Creek and many others will be pouring nearly 100 classic California selections that will be paired with gourmet bites prepared by chefs from several top Santa Barbara restaurants during this fifth annual event.

Lunar New Year Festival
Ring in the Chinese New Year with a giant celebration that includes entertainment, food and family activities to enjoy along seven blocks in downtown Monterey Park. Traditional lion and dragon dancers, lots of vendors and a large carnival family fun zone are also among the highlights.

Tet Festival
The Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of Southern California presents its 36th annual event celebrating the lunar year. Attractions include the Miss Vietnam of Southern California Pageant, music and dance performances, food vendors and games.

Asian Pacific Lunar New Year Festival
Traditional Asian music, taiko drums, dance performances, art displays, martial arts demonstrations and Asian cultural displays highlight the annual lunar festival, which opens with a parade of nations at 10 a.m. In the evening, the closing ceremony includes a fireworks display ringing in the Lunar New Year.

San Gabriel Lunar New Year Festival
San Gabriel Lunar New Year celebration combines the traditional and modern with 30-foot outdoor stage with live performances, dance competition, food trucks, craft beer garden, and kids zone.

Festival of Human Abilities
The 13th annual showcase of the creative talents and abilities of people with disabilities, including a wheelchair dance, live music, choirs, art and scuba-diving demonstrations, interactive workshops and other performances by people with disabilities. Sign language interpreters will be available during major shows, and an audio tour will be available for those who are blind.

FEBRUARY
Surf City Marathon
Thouands of runners and their supporters will turn out for the full marathon, a half marathon and a wheelchair race early on Super Bowl Sunday. Attractions include an Active Lifestyle Expo and a beer garden.

Laguna Beach Music Festival

Chocolate Decadence and Pechanga Wine Festival
Chocolate and wine pair nicely during the ninth annual events at Pechanga Resort & Casino. For Chocolate Decadence, from 7-10 p.m. Feb. 10, more than 30 wine varietals are partnered with chocolate and other sweet desserts. The next day, from 1-5 p.m., the wine festival uncorks selections from the Temecula Valley, Central California, Napa/Sonoma, the Pacific Northwest and international producers.

Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival
Launched 72 years ago to celebrate the date harvest, the event offers diversions for every member of the family, including carnival rides, midway games, monster truck and motocross shows, camel and ostrich races, and an Arabian Nights Musical Pageant.

Air + Style
Action sports, live music, fashion, art, lifestyle trends and food combine during a two-day event staged by Shaun White Enterprises and hosted by the Olympic gold medalist. Competitors will be tackling a 16-story, 450-foot ramp and a 70-foot jump set up in the Coliseum. Featured performers include Major Lazer, Flume, Zhu, Chromeo, Atmosphere, YG and TV on the Radio.

ScotsFestival & International Highland Games

African-American Festival

Self Help Fest

Dana Point Festival of Whales
With dozens of California gray whales passing by Dana Point each day during this time of year, it’s a perfect time to celebrate their annual 10,000-mile round trip between summer feeding grounds off the coast of Alaska and the calving area in the waters near Baja. It’s possible to see the giant mammals via whale-watching excursions and even from the 200-foot cliffs of the Dana Point Headlands. In addition, each weekend during this 46th annual event includes classic car and vintage boat displays, walking tours, and Polynesian dance and music.

Festival of Colors
DJs and performers, interactive dance, yoga, crafts and Indian cuisine return for the fifth annual event. The “colors” are eco-friendly powders (made from corn starch, food-grade dyes and fragrance) available on-site that participants throw at each other.

Musink
The 10th annual Musink, curated by Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, will be three-days of stellar tattoo art, fancy lowriders and punk rock music with performances by NOFX, the Vandals, the Used, Glassjaw, Pennywise, Bad Religion and many more. Latin Food Fest

Swallows Day Parade and Mercado Street Fair
The 59th annual parade celebrates the return of the swallows to Mission San Juan Capistrano on St. Joseph’s Day. The Mercado Street Faire takes place before, during and after the parade and features live music, food vendors and a kids’ play zone.

WonderCon Anaheim 2017

International Children’s Day
Not limited to a single day, this festival for kids celebrates the talents of children of all cultures, with performances by West African, Mexican, Pacific Islander, Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Persian dancers. Also featured, a children’s choir and martial arts demonstrations. Kids of all ages can partake in an international percussion circle, face painting, and Native American and Pacific Islander traditional children’s crafts and games.

Renaissance Pleasure Faire
Spend a weekend afternoon traveling back in time to the days of yore when Queen Elizabeth I ruled England. Twenty acres of the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area are transformed each spring into a wooded playground with entertainment, such as fully armored jousting, and populated with characters wearing elaborate costumes that recall the era. Stagecoach
Hordes of country music fans will congregate for three days in the desert for the 11th Annual Stagecoach festival headlined in by genre giants including Dierks Bentley, Shania Twain and Kenny Chesney. The diverse line-up will also include sets by pop star Cyndi Lauper, who released a country covers album in 2016, Elle King, whose duet with Bentley on “Different for Girls” was a No. 1 hit, multi-Grammy nominated up-and-coming star Maren Morris and legends like Willie Nelson and Family and Jerry Lee Lewis. Urban Ocean Festival

Fiesta Hermosa

Lavender Festival
Marking the start of the lavender harvest season, the 12th annual festival promises family fun, including guided tours in horse-drawn wagons, demonstrations on how lavender oil is extracted, opportunities to taste lavender-inspired dishes and live music. It takes place at a 2,400-acre historic landmark in the San Gorgonio Pass that was used as a stagecoach stop in the mid-1800s.

Anime Expo 2017

Huntington Beach 4th of July Celebration
A full day of activities begins with a pancake breakfast and 5K run, has its centerpiece the largest Independence Day parade west of the Mississippi, includes live entertainment and culminates with fireworks launched from the end of the pier.

Festival of Arts/Pageant of the Masters
Classic paintings and sculptures are brought to life – literally – in an outdoor theater at the Pageant of the Masters, as actors posing in elaborate makeup and beautifully crafted sets that re-create works by the old masters and other talented artists. “The Grand Tour” is the theme of the 2017 show, which will focus on dynamic duos, including artists, patrons, models and muses. Each ticket also allows admission to the Festival of Arts grounds, where original works by 140 artists are on display and available for purchase.

Orange County Fair

Festival of Lights
The historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa is decorated for the holidays with more than 4 million LED lights and 400-plus animated angels, elves and other characters. It’s the focal point of the 25th annual celebration that also includes horse-drawn carriage rides, an ice-skating rink, carolers and other musicians. It all adds up to an event that’s been named the “Best Holiday Festival” in the country by USA Today. The exciting “switch-on” ceremony, the night after Thanksgiving, is punctuated by a 15-minute fireworks show.
