SOUTH HADLEY – Guitarist June Millington will headline a Saturday afternoon concert at Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School to raise money for a January field trip to Puerto Rico.
The concert at PVPA on 15 Mulligan Drive begins at 2 p.m. The suggested donation is $20.
Millington, once hailed by Guitar Player magazine as the industry’s hottest female guitarist, was co-founder of the all-female 1970s rock band Fanny.
Millington, with Ann Hackler, are co-founders of the Institute for the Musical Arts, located on 25 acres in Goshen.
The field trip is part of an education initiative involving Easthampton-based Music and Poetry Synchronized, or MAPS.
“MAPS will now build a partnership of musical and cultural exchange between PVPA and the Alcides Figueroa School (AFS) in Añasco, Puerto Rico,” school officials said in a statement announcing the field trip by 15 of their students to the Figueroa school.
Starting fall of 2019, AFS students will begin the poetry curriculum focused on their experiences during and after Hurricane Maria; these will be given to music students at PVPA in December 2019.
In January, 15 PVPA students will fly to Puerto Rico for a week of collaborative work with the AFS students and performances of their work together.
