MLB.com’s Anne Rogers reports “outfielder Lane Thomas tested positive for COVID-19 from his Saturday test, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said on a Zoom call Sunday. Thomas had been identified as a probable positive because he is roommates with reliever Ryan Helsley, who tested positive Thursday.”

A total of 17 members of the Cardinals, including 10 players, have tested positive for the coronavirus over the last two weeks. As a result, St. Louis has had series against the Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs and the Pirates postponed. The Cardinals last played a game on Wednesday, July 29, when they concluded a two-game series with the Twins in Minneapolis. After having 13 games scrubbed by the coronavirus, the Cardinals face the daunting task of of playing 55 games in just 46 days if they are to complete a 60-game season.

Just to give you a sense of how serious the outbreak is on the Cardinals, manager Mike Shildt said Sunday that some of the players have had to go to the hospital.

“There are people that have symptoms, and have had a few visits to the ER for some IVs and a little more clarity,” Shildt told KMOX, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Nobody has had to stay. But there are people dealing with — I mean, this is real. And people are experiencing a lot of the symptoms that we hear about, that are associated with this. A variety of them. Most of them are experiencing multiple ones. Seems like they rotate with them. And again, nobody is in close to any critical shape, but people are having to deal with some things that aren’t comfortable at all. And hopefully we can get that behind them. They’re getting great care.”

MLB’s coronavirus crisis began when the Miami Marlins had 21 members of its club test positive for COVID-19, including 18 players, while in Philadelphia for the beginning of the season.

After finishing their season-opening series against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies had three staff members test positive - a coach, a home clubhouse attendant and a visitors clubhouse attendant. But the coach and home clubhouse attendant had false positive results on their coronavirus tests and the visitors clubhouse attendant didn’t have contact with the team.
