What do tofu, banana slugs and trucker hats have in common besides being spotted often around Humboldt County? Simple drawing lessons in a self-guided workbook by illustrator K.M. Myers. “Drawing Humboldt Step-by-Step Practice Book” features 40 lessons, and space is provided to draw inside. It’s available at Eureka Natural Foods in Eureka and McKinleyville.

“I learned this way of drawing while earning my MFA,” Myers said, “It is really helpful in simplifying how to approach a drawing subject, so less intimidating than contour drawing or even building up an image by shading.”

The artist didn’t have any trouble picking out Humboldt County things to draw.

She said, “I have several subjects that didn’t make the cut. I basically had to stop at 40 because it felt like I was never going to publish it. I have a long list of things I consider ‘Humboldty.’”

Myers is a Cal Poly Humboldt graduate. She works part time as an art teacher. This is her third book.

“Drawing Humboldt A Step-by-Step Practice Book” is available for free on Kindle for a limited time.
