Pennsylvania reported 645 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, continuing the upturn in cases that began this month.
The state’s 7-day moving average of new cases is well above 600, after falling as low as 161 on July 4, according to tracking by Johns Hopkins. The moving average is considered the best indicator of the overall case trend, since fluctuations related to things such as reporting backlogs get evened out.
Hospitalizations continued to rise, with 445 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Pennsylvania as of early Wednesday. That’s up from 430 on Tuesday and about 260 at the beginning of last week. The number in intensive care on Wednesday, 95, was down from 97 on Tuesday.
The state reported 7 new deaths, raising Pennsylvania’s toll to 27,843.
About 63% of Pennsylvania adults 18 and older are fully vaccinated.
