Analysis + Evaluation of 2022 OT Commit Nick Herzog

The Wildcats picked up a fierce blocker in one of Kansas' top prospects.

6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive tackle Nick Herzog turned down multiple Power 5 offers, including from his home-state schools, to join what is becoming a nationally recognized position group in Evanston. Herzog became the fourth member of Northwestern’s 2022 class when he committed on June 10.

The Class of 2022 prospect from Blue Valley High School (Stilwell, Kan.) is a consensus three-star recruit and two-sport athlete who competes for his high school’s wrestling team. In addition to Northwestern, Herzog held Power 5 offers from Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Stanford, Vanderbilt and Virginia. Additionally, he had offers from Group of 5 schools Memphis and Middle Tennessee State plus Ivy League offers from Pennsylvania and Princeton. According to his junior season Hudl video, Herzog has won numerous honors including 1st Team All-State Sports in Kansas and All-Simone (All-Metro) Team.

Analysis: Herzog prides himself on being mobile, fast and explosive, and his film definitely shows he is trending in the right direction with regard to each of these three qualities. He is a physical, fierce blocker who does not stop until the whistle blows. Last season he contributed to a strong rushing attack, as Blue Valley had multiple running backs who averaged around 100 yards per game. The team finished 6-2 overall, and lost just one regular season game.

As he frequently advertises on his Twitter page, Herzog regularly hones his skills at TopSpeed Strength and Conditioning, a private sports training facility outside of Kansas City. It is run by former Royals strength and conditioning coach Joseph Potts. Potts has trained several professional athletes including Tyreek Hill.

Herzog has demonstrated his willingness to move around on the offensive line as needed, even spending some of his few free moments practicing at center.

At 270 pounds, Herzog is a little smaller than some of the recent Northwestern standouts like Rashawn Slater (315 pounds) and Peter Skronski (294 pounds), but he will have time to get his weight up before he arrives in Evanston. According to an April 2021 tweet from Potts, Herzog put on 12 pounds since his previous season, and continued to break his personal record in a number of strength and conditioning tests.
