Boater suffered burns in explosion, fire at Leatherwood Marina on Kentucky Lake

The Leaf-Chronicle

One man was injured in the boat explosion that led to a fire at the Leatherwood Marina on Kentucky Lake Sunday morning.

At about 10:30 a.m., a houseboat caught fire, and the fire spread to the Dover marina, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said Monday afternoon.

The injured man was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville with burns to his legs, and as of Monday he was expected to be released.

The fire spread to multiple boats before being extinguished at 11:45 a.m. Four houseboats sank and six other vessels were damaged, TWRA reported.

Leatherwood Resort & Marina on Monday afternoon posted thanks to the community for its prayers and concern.

"Our hearts go out to everyone that lost their boat or had damage to their boat. Environmental cleaning began yesterday continuing throughout today," the post said. "The private dock is damaged badly in the back and we ask anyone to stay off the private dock only, for their own safety. The regular docks have not been affected and are accessible."

The Pirates Cove restaurant and bar remains open and wasn't affected by the fire.

The exact cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday afternoon.
