Scholastic sports roundup: Ramblers overpower Cougars on the pitch

Windber bested North Star 5-1 in boys soccer, Wednesday, in Kantner.

Stephen Campitell and Andrew Floyd each scored a goal for the Ramblers. Noah Krause, William Minahan and Nick Vasas each had a goal and an assist. Zach Geiser also added an assist.

Joe Burkhard made nine saves in net.

North Star’s goal came on an own goal.

Windber (1-1-1) travels to Conemaugh Township today.

Rockwood 8, Berlin 2

Tycho Van der Meer tallied three goals and an assist to lead Rockwood past Berlin 8-2 in boys soccer, Wednesday, in Berlin.

Luke Latuch netted two goals for the Rockets. Gabe Latuch and Jack Pletcher each added a goal and an assist.

Cole Hostetter added a goal.

Will Latuch contributed three assists. Tyler Harrold and Jacob Keller each had an assist.

Elijah Sechler netted both goals for the Mountaineers.

Rockwood (2-0) travels to Forbes Road on Friday. Berlin is 0-2.

Hyndman 6, Berlin 5

Berlin fell to Hyndman 6-5 in overtime in boys soccer action, Monday.

Elijah Sechler scored two goals for the Mountaineers. Ty Walker, Keegan Huston and Caden Montgomery each added a goal.

Everett 5, NS 2

North Star dropped a boys nonconference soccer match to Everett, Tuesday.

Johnathan Scott scored both goals for the Cougars.

Biery earns MaxPreps honor

North Star’s CJ Biery claimed MaxPreps/United Soccer Coaches High School Player of the Week honors for Pennsylvania.

He had two goals and two assists against Conemaugh Township to earn the honor.

BG 3, Somerset 2

Somerset was edged by Bishop Guilfoyle 3-2 in LHAC girls soccer, Wednesday, in Somerset.

Haley Vought and Willa Sharbaugh recorded goals for the Golden Eagles.

Shade 3, Salisbury 0

Shade swept Salisbury in WestPAC girls volleyball action, Wednesday, in Cairnbrook.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-12, 25-15.

Jenna Muha tallied 13 kills for the Panthers. Taylor Rapsky contributed 10 kills and Josie Rhoads added six. Cassie Mauger recorded 23 assists and six aces. McKenzie Baer provided eight digs.

Somerset golf wins pair

Somerset improved to 8-1 in LHAC golf with victories over Westmont and Bishop Carroll, Wednesday, at Ebensburg Country Club.

The Golden Eagles shot 214 to best the Hilltoppers (234) and Huskies (255).

Somerset top six: Andrew Platt 39 (medalist), Braden Lohr 44, Chase Stoy 46, Brayden Custer 42, Josh Augustine 52, Aiden VanLenten 43.

Somerset travels to Windber Country Club next Tuesday to take on Richland.

Somerset XC sweeps

The Somerset boys and girls cross country teams opened the season with victories over Cambria Heights, Wednesday both teams.

The boys defeated the Highlanders 15-44.

Branson Walker edged brother Colton by a hair, both recording a time of 17:47. Andrew Straka took third in 17:52. Colby Livingood was fourth in 19:17, and fifth went to Chase Brenneman in 19:34. Tony Mills placed seventh at 20:37.

The Golden Eagle girls won 25-33.

Somerset took third through eighth places. Jade Williams was third at 26:04, Carly Richards fourth at 27:54, Kaylee Richards fifth at 28:16, Alyssa Richards sixth at 28:24, Kaylin Weaver seventh at 29:52, and Ella Peck eighth at 30:39.

Somerset visits Richland on Saturday.

Correction

In the Windber girls soccer brief that ran in Wednesday’s paper, it was reported to the Daily American that Rylee Ott netted the Ramblers’ goal against Berlin.

It was reported Wednesday to the newspaper that the goal came on an own goal.
