Dallas, Then Washington, With Best Route to NFC East Title Based on Opponents

Dallas, then Washington, with best route to NFC East title originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Every team in the NFC East has played 10 games, and every team in the NFC East has only won three games.

That’s quite bad, and as if the records needed more illustration of their futility, every NFC East team has a negative point differential on the season. Dallas has the worst at -83 while Washington has the best at -27.

Still, no matter what, one team will win this division and host a playoff game. Seriously.

And it could certainly be Washington.

With six games remaining, the Burgundy and Gold will only face two teams with a winning record. Washington has not won a game on the road this season though and has four road games remaining. Good news, however, is two of those road games are against teams Washington has already beaten in Dallas and Philadelphia.

Washington isn’t going to beat the Steelers or the Seahawks, but every game after that could be interesting.

Don’t count out the rest of the division either.

Let’s start with Dallas coming off a surprise win in Minnesota. The Cowboys got Andy Dalton back at quarterback and might face the easiest schedule remaining. Dallas has three NFC East games to play and a contest against the Bengals coming up. That’s four winnable games in six contests.

Then there is Philadelphia, the team most assumed would win the division.

Well, the Eagles have lost two in a row, are a train wreck at quarterback and face the hardest schedule by far of the four NFC East teams. The next four games for Philly: Seattle at home, at Green Bay, home against the Saints and at Arizona. The Eagles could be out of the NFC East race before Christmas.

That leaves the Giants, currently on a two-game win streak and on their bye week. New York is playing good football, or at least good football for the NFC East, but in their remaining six games, four opponents have winning records.

From Week 13 to 16, the Giants travel to Seattle, stay home for consecutive games against the Cardinals and the Browns and then travel to Baltimore. That’s a gauntlet before a season finale at home against Dallas.

It’s easy to make jokes about the NFC East - and plenty of people are - but some team will win it. That could be Washington, though Dallas might have the inside track based on its opponents.
