INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police say two people were killed in a crash involving a cargo van and a semi tractor-trailer on Interstate 465 late Thursday.

The accident occurred around 11:52 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-465 near the 27 mile marker. That is on the city’s northwest side.

Investigators said two unconscious and unresponsive adult males were entrapped in the van. Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department worked to extricate both individuals.

The passenger, identified as Brenden Harper, 25, of Indianapolis, died at the scene.

The driver, 33-year-old Andrew Blackwell of Greenwood, was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced deceased.

The semi driver was checked out at the scene.

A preliminary investigation determined the semi-tractor trailer had pulled over to the right shoulder due to a mechanical issue when the van ran off the road and struck the back of the trailer. Indications are the semi-tractor trailer was not in the travel lane and had emergency flashers activated.

The westbound lanes of I-465 were restricted for four hours while the crash was investigated.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
