Choosing the perfect rug is an aesthetic investment that requires practical inspection. A final touch for completing a room, in the rug-buying market there are various things to consider where textures, colours and shapes are as desirably diverse as they can be drab.

The right rug can be the ideal accessory to harmonise a space or serve as a major design feature for turning heads. In tune with the minimalism aesthetic still dominating our wardrobes and home accessories, a geometric pattern is a relatively timeless choice with enough versatility to transfer between room themes.

For flawless floors, look to these handy hints when rug-browsing.

1. Shop with the intention of filling the space. To avoid the awkward ‘floating carpet’ look, your rug should be touching the furniture surrounding it. It helps having measurements of the area where the rug will sit for reference.

2. Base the colour and fabrication of your rug on the room that it’s decorating. For areas with more foot-traffic like hallways, opt for sturdier fabrics in darker colours – a no-brainer that’s less prone to showing stains.

3. Contrast the floor in colour and texture. This really goes without saying - lighter rugs are visually stronger on darker floors and vice versa. The same rule applies for texture. For example, if you’re decorating a carpet floor, consider a shag-pile rug to create a stronger fabric contrast.

Whatever your dream rug may be, we’ve compiled a list of stunning colours and geo prints for your perusal.

HOVSLUND Rug, low pile

If a bargain is what you're looking for, this design comes at a small price in a classic geo pattern that will compliment most spaces. Made of synthetic fibres, it means the rug is fairly durable and stain resistant, not to mention the darker colour is a saviour for hiding dirt marks. With a measurement of 3.68 m², its convenient size fits perfectly under a dining or coffee table.

Another bargain for those on a budget, this jacquard-weave rug from H&M in an ultra-sophisticated monochrome geo is reminiscent of Art Deco styles. Being 100 per cent cotton, a super handy aspect of this rug is it's machine washable, so the white backdrop needn't deter you.

Sundance Woven Wool 3x5 Rug

This rug has a more boho feel, with warm tones that would make any bedroom feel cosy. Featuring a fringed trim and Sundance print, it looks particularly striking on floorboards as pictured here for a more rustic feel. Measuring at 91.4cm/3ft x 152.4cm/5ft, it's not as generous in size as the other rugs, so works best featured in smaller rooms or hallways.

Meara Viscose Rug

Exclusive to Anthropologie, this calming pastel print offers an organic take on the traditional geo with curvacious lines inviting to the eye. The medium pile offers a subtle texture that allows the print to speak for itself. At 5ft x 8ft, it's accommodating size works well in living rooms of similar pastel tones.

John Lewis & Partners Verona Rug

We love the chaotic nature of this print, with nods to the Cubist movement reminiscent in the style of a Georges Braque painting. The soft wool-blend composition is made and hand-tufted in India, celebrated for craft and expertise in textiles. Though it's size would adapt well to dining room settings, this print demands attention, best accentuated in a living room space with dark floors.
