LONDON, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky man has been charged with killing his parents and stealing their car, authorities said.

Joseph L. Benge, 40, is accused of fatally shooting Johnny Benge, 69 and Mary Benge, 66, at their home in the rural town of London, according to a statement from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office. A family member found the couple dead on Tuesday and called authorities.

Sheriff John Root said Benge left the scene of the shooting in the family’s white 2015 Ford Taurus, but he was later apprehended without incident by Kentucky State Police about 300 miles (483 kilometers) away in Mayfield.

Benge was charged with two counts of murder, robbery and theft by unlawful taking.

The sheriff’s office says it is traveling to Mayfield to pick up Benge and he will be lodged in the Laurel County jail.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Benge has an attorney who could comment.
