Raw steak left in car cooks to well-done in just hours
A Victorian cafe worker managed to prove just how hot it’s getting on the east coast of Australia after leaving a raw steak inside a car for five hours.
“Yesterday at 11am I put a porterhouse steak in my car which was parked in the shade and left it until 4pm,” the Mildura Dockside Cafe worker wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
“It was very well done upon my return.”
Mildura, in the state’s north, reached a high of 45.8C on Tuesday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
“With this heatwave please remember never to leave children, elderly or animals in the car,” the cafe worker added.
“Always check on elderly neighbours, ensure your pets have a way to keep cool and cool drinking water.”
While the message about the danger of hot cars was serious, many Facebook commentators had fun with the concept of cooking a steak inside a car on a hot day.
“This is why Australia is great … can cook a steak in the car,” one person said.
Others couldn’t get past the idea that the car must have been a bit whiffy after having a steak inside it for five hours.
“I bet your car smelt awesome,” one person wrote.
Others were dubious, with one person writing: “A car left IN THE SUN will get up to about 60 to 70 degrees Celsius inside. In the shade? Nope. Not going to get ‘well done’.”
Some begged to differ, with one Facebook user noting: “Gordon Ramsay cooked a small beef roast in his car parked in the sun. I’m sure it could cook a steak.”
The cafe worker said they wanted to “remind people how dangerous this heat can be and that as a community we should be looking out for one another [and] keeping each other safe.”
“A car turns into an oven,” one user agreed.
“Get the message people!”
