(UPDATE May 7, 2021:) Rochester police this week charged Kyrique Massey, 31, and Sohn Travis, 32, both of Rochester with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, the department announced Friday morning.

During the early morning confrontation on Monroe Avenue on April 9, Massey and Travis are both accused of firing multiple gunshots from their respective handguns at Matthew Williams, 29, of Rochester, said Rochester Police Capt. Frank Umbrino. Williams was struck by at least three bullets and died at the scene.

Both Massey and Travis are convicted felons who are each prohibited from legally possessing a handgun due to earlier felony convictions of criminal possession of a weapon. Both men completed parole following time in state prison.

Massey was arraigned and pleaded not guilty in Rochester City Court on Wednesday morning and is being held in the Monroe County Jail without bail. Travis is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning.

(ORIGINAL STORY April 9, 2021): Three people were shot, one fatally, in an early-morning shooting on Monroe Avenue in Rochester.

Rochester police said 29-year-old Matthew Williams was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene following an altercation at the corner of Monroe Avenue and Woodlawn Street around 1 a.m. Friday. The argument, police said, "escalated into multiple gunshots being fired."

Two others — a man and a woman both in their 30s — were also shot during the deadly argument and were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Police do not believe that any of the three shooting victims were the shooter and do not know if they were even involved in the altercation, police said.

No one has been apprehended in connection with the triple shooting.

Monroe and Woodlawn is near Mark's Texas Hots Restaurant and roughly three blocks southeast of the James Monroe High School campus. A portion of Monroe Avenue is temporarily closed due to the investigation.

The slaying marks Rochester's 19th homicide of the year and second fatal shooting within 16 hours. Jacob Wims, 28, of Rochester was shot to death inside a car parked on Mead Street just before 10 a.m. Thursday.

More than half of the city's 2021 homicides occurred within the last month, according to Rochester police.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 911 or (585) 428-7616.
