Yahoo Finance Dior’s Nose documentary is pure perfume escapism
The world of fine fragrance has long been shrouded in mystery – an air of exclusivity that only adds to the appeal of a treasured scent.
Long revered for its unrestrained commitment to the traditions of fine perfumery, the house of Dior is now offering a glimpse into this usually closed-doors industry with the launch of its documentary, Nose.
Directors Arthur de Kersauson and Clément Beauvais followed Dior’s perfumer François Demachy for two years, providing a rarely seen insight into the Maison de Parfums creative process.
Educational anecdotes intersect the sublime cinematic shots that illustrate Demarchy’s global search for fragrant inspiration. The journey takes him through Grasse to Indonesia via Sri Lanka, in a trip that makes the perfect hour of armchair escapism.
“There’s a little bit of nostalgia in being here, since this is where I grew up,” says Demachy, stood in the sun-soaked fields of Grasse. “I remember going past here early in the morning, because back then there were nightclubs around Valbonne. The road back to Grasse went through here. And since it was during the summer holidays in August, the jasmine was blooming. Those memories are embedded in me.”
It’s this remarkable memory for scent, and all the nuances that come with it, that makes Demachy such an interesting and formidable nose. His intricate knowledge of scents in nature – how a rose smells in the rain, or in the sun, for example – truly sets him apart from others in the field, and makes for fascinating viewing.
