BBE bounces back, beats Paynesville

Jaguars improve to 7-3 with Central Minnesota Conference win

PAYNESVILLE — After seeing the first set against Paynesville slip through its fingers on Thursday, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa volleyball team had the higher scores in the next three sets to come away with a 3-1 Central Minnesota Conference victory during Breast Cancer Awareness Night from Paynesville High School.

Bulldogs junior Brynn Johnson collected a kill to knot the score at 17-17 in the opening set. At that point, the two teams combined for 10 ties. From there, the Jaguars reeled off six straight points, capped by a pair of aces from sophomore defensive specialist Kylie Winter.

The road team served with set point at 24-21 before the Bulldogs produced the next four points. Senior middle hitter Brittany Berge evened matters at 25-25, before Paynesville ended the frame thanks to a Johnson block and a Berge attack went out of bounds.

BBE took control in the remaining sets, taking the second by the margin of 25-20 along, and then the next two by double figures: 25-14 and 25-15.

Berge led all hitters with 17 kills. Karsee Kampsen had 35 assists and two aces while sophomore libero Emily Kern collected a team-high 24 digs and three aces. Sophomore defensive special Kylie Winter led the Jaguars with five aces.

For the Bulldogs, senior libero Skylar Burg matched Kern’s effort with 24 digs.

Willmar 3, Fergus Falls 0

Starting slow during its match on the road against Fergus Falls, Willmar eventually got into gear to emerge with a 3-0 victory on Thursday.

The Cardinals were sluggish at times in the opening set, but still managed to come out on top 25-22. From there, the road team ripped off a 25-18 result in the second set before closing the match in dominating fashion. With a 25-12 score in the third and final frame, Willmar improved its overall record to 8-4.

“In the first set, we didn’t serve-receive very well, and then we played better as the night went on,” Cards head coach Traci Grussing said.

As the team’s serve receive improved, sophomore setter Lydia Larson went to work, as she dished out 39 assists. Junior outside hitters Sophia Kobienia and Bailey Olson were two of the main beneficiaries, as the duo put up 12 and 11 kills, respectively. The two hitters were also strong on the block, as Kobienia had four stuffs and Olson had three. Sophomore middle hitter Mackenzie Knofczynski led the team with five blocks.

The Cardinals also had seven serve aces, with three coming from senior defensive specialist Cambrie Parker.

Willmar will next be in action on Tuesday, as the team will travel to St. Cloud Apollo.

Ashlyn Olson and Ava Kraemer made life tough for the Rockets’ hitters as the Wildcats duo had six blocks apiece. Olson also had a team-high 13 kills while Kraemer had a pair of kills. Aleah Zieske led NLS in digs (18) and ace serves (two).

Litchfield evened up its Wright County Conference mark to 2-0 after beating Mound-Westonka in three sets on Thursday, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15.

The Dragons’ top attackers were Lily Osterberg and Sydney McCann with eight kills apiece. McCann also had 10 digs, bested only by teammate Kamri Driver with 19.

Osterberg was just as effective on the service line for Litchfield with seven aces.

Ridgewater won its fourth game in five contests with a five-set victory against Century College Wednesday in St. Paul, 24-26, 25-15, 26-24, 25-18, 15-10.

Defense at the net proved to be key for the Warriors as the team came up with 22 blocks. Leading the way was Baylee Larsen with six, followed by five from Emily Knight. Knight also had a busy night on offense with 55 set assists while Lydia Wagner led the squad with 20 kills. Nicole Thonvold led Ridgewater with 23 digs.
