President Donald Trump spoke at an event yesterday at the White House to announce the Great American Outdoors Act.
In the process, Trump butchered the name of one of America’s greatest outdoor treasures - Yosemite National Park in California.
The bill establishing the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund was sponsored by the late Rep. John Lewis. The bill provides funding for “priority deferred” maintenance projects on federal land.
USA Today reported that Trump said, “When young Americans experience the breathtaking beauty of the Grand Canyon, when their eyes widen in amazement as Old Faithful bursts into the sky, when they gaze upon Yosemite’s — Yosemite’s towering sequoias, their love of country grows stronger and they know that every American has truly a duty to preserve this wondrous inheritance.'
But he stumbled over Yoh-sem-it-ee, pronouncing it YO-se-MIGHT, and then adding a syllable, ‘YO-se-min-NIGHT.'
The official White House transcript released after the event notes the error with the misspelling, ‘Yoseminite’s [sic].‘”
