Public health officials use test positivity rates to determine both the current level of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in a given community, and if enough testing is being done to accurately depict spread of the virus.

Early in the coronavirus pandemic, the World Health Organization recommended community closures if test rates surpassed 5%, indicating that viral spread was too high and/or not enough testing was being done to accurately gauge transmission.
