Corpus Christi police issued 50 citations for illegal fireworks in city limits during the celebration of the new year.

The citations came after city leaders encouraged residents not to discharge fireworks in city limits or city beaches.

An ordinance makes it illegal to discharge fireworks in city limits, and a citation could result in a fine of up to $2,000.

The City of Corpus Christi and HEB present the annual Mayor's New Year's Eve Big Bang Firework Show, Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020. Attendees were encouraged to watch from their vehicles due to COVID-19 concerns.

Thursday, Police Chief Mike Markle, Fire Chief Robert Rocha and City Manager Peter Zanoni reminded residents of the dangers and consequences of discharging fireworks.

City leaders also encouraged residents to attend the Mayor's New Year's Eve Big Bang Firework Show along the Bayfront.

Monday, police said 50 citations were issued for illegal fireworks.
