Tinnie of the Week: Little Creatures’ Ancient Traveller Ethiopian Black Barley Stout

Trying out this week’s sip, Jay Rooney gives his verdict on the Tinnie of the Week and whether it’s worth cracking one with a mate.

BEER NAME?

Little Creatures Ancient Traveller Ethiopian Black Barley Stout

WHERE’S IT FROM?

WA brewing institution Little Creatures, which has been pumping out local brews for just over two decades.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

This single batch release uses Ethiopian black barley, one of the world’s oldest barleys that dates back to 4500BC.

The ancient grain has only been grown in Australia since 2008 for the artisan baking industry.

However, Little Creatures head brewer Russ Gosling had an idea to make it the hero of a stout and teamed up with New South Wales-based Voyager Craft Malt to bring the concept to life.

Pouring dark black with a tanned, fluffy head, Ancient Traveller offers nut, biscuit and roasted coffee aromas from the use of the Ethiopian black barley.

Fuggle hops produce a distinctive earthy flavour while there are also hints of licorice and even tobacco on the palate.

There is a solid level of bitterness and a soft and slightly oily mouthfeel to finish.

SHOULD I SHARE IT?

At six per cent ABV, this forward-thinking stout is certainly worth sharing with mates as a nightcap or around a campfire while the nights are still cold early this spring.
