The one-day event is sponsored by The Cinema Foundation and the National Association of Theater Owners, in cooperation with theater chains and major movie studios throughout the U.S. It comes after the COVID pandemic over the past two years kept many Americans away from theaters.

“After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” Cinema Foundation President Jackie Brenneman said in a news release. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”
