The forecast for Southern California as we head into Labor Day is calling for excessive heat through Sunday evening with dangerously hot conditions and temperatures reaching up to 112 degrees. That’s brutal but there are ways to escape the heat.

Clink Some Seriously Cold Ones
Who says you need to wait until October to enjoy the ice-cold brews of Oktoberfest? Not the folks at Golden Road Brewery in Atwater Village. This Thursday, September 1, there’s live music, Bavarian pretzels and frosty 12-ounce mugs filled with freshly tapped German-style Märzenbier created exclusively for the Thirsty Thursday event. You Can’t Spell Academy Museum Without A/C
The Academy Museum’s powerful “Regeneration” exhibition, running through September 29, looks at Black filmmaking from 1898 through the early 1970s. I toured the museum last week and was deeply moved by the rare collection of cinema posters highlighting “race films” with all-Black casts that were distributed almost exclusively to Black audiences throughout the segregated United States. The exhibit also spotlights work by innovators such as Melvin Van Peebles as well as groundbreaking clips from iconic screen legends Paul Robeson, Josephine Baker, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, Lena Horne, and Sammy Davis Jr. Location: The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, 6067 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036
Head to the Roof
It's always a little cooler on the roof.
If the heat gets you down, head upstairs to one of Rooftop Cinema’s alfresco movie locations downtown in the Arts District or on South Olive Street, or in El Segundo. With deckchairs under the night sky, wireless headphones and plenty of booze, candy and popcorn, you can catch a breeze and maybe spot a shooting star. This week’s movies include Bridesmaids, The Wolf of Wall Street, Pulp Fiction and Scream. Check daily listings for each of the three locations. Rooftop Cinema is one of the liveliest nights out in the city this summer.

Yacht it Up
When temperatures creep up into the triple digits in L.A., you have to head to the water. The 8th annual Pier Pressure booze cruise makes it easy by sending you off on a three-hour excursion aboard a massive party boat with plenty of space to dance and mingle on the open-air deck. The yacht never leaves Marina del Rey Harbor but it’s still an adventure with three party decks, two DJs on two floors, and endless opportunities for oonz-oonz-oonz-backed good times. September 4. Ice, Ice, Baby
This has to be the coolest way to spend 12 minutes on a climate-change weekend like this. On the ice at the LA Kings Valley Ice Centre, you and your parka-wearing buds can race around a track on ice-karts built for skidding and sliding. There’s a an obstacle course to navigate and non-frozen games to play while you’re waiting. Riders must be age 14 or older. $65 a ride.
