The old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" has some truth to it. Regardless of the variety of apples you prefer, the fruit is a good source of fiber, vitamin C and other nutrients that can reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol, lower risk of type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of various cancers. Attend the Apple Extravaganza on Sept. 17 at the Virginia Beach Farmers Market.

Nashville Hot Chicken — Yes, the hottest trend in fried chicken happened completely by mistake. It was introduced at the legendary Prince's Hot Chicken Shack in the 1930s, after (as legend has it) one of owner Thornton Prince's girlfriends suspected that he was cheating on her, so she fed him fried chicken that she'd doused with spicy oil as punishment. Turns out that he enjoyed it so much that he added it to his menu! Try hot chicken at the Nashfest on Sept. 17.
