The Oregon Health Authority on Wednesday reported about 4,300 newly identified coronavirus cases over the past week, down slightly from a week earlier.

The latest tally represents only a fraction of actual cases, however, because many people identify infections through at-home tests that don’t show up in the state’s official numbers.

Hospitalizations and deaths remain at low levels compared to earlier phases of the pandemic.

A recent forecast by Oregon Health & Science University indicates infections and hospitalizations are projected to continue falling until early November.

Meanwhile, Europe, which in the past two years experienced fall surges earlier than the United States, has recorded an uptick in cases this month.

Since it began: Oregon has reported 894,776 confirmed or presumed infections and 8,561 deaths.

Hospitalizations: 268 people with confirmed coronavirus infections are hospitalized, up 31 since Wednesday, Sept. 21. That includes 35 people in intensive care, up five since Sept. 21.

New deaths: Since Sept. 21, the Oregon Health Authority has reported 41 additional deaths connected to COVID-19.
