Sangamon County's COVID cases fall 33%; Illinois cases holding steady

Illinois reported 17,373 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, from 17,584 the week before of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Illinois ranked 13th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 0.6% from the week before, with 401,433 cases reported. With 3.81% of the country's population, Illinois had 4.33% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 17 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Sangamon County reported 268 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 400 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 69,176 cases and 421 deaths.

Logan County reported 35 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 50 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,452 cases and 94 deaths.

Menard County reported 12 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 19 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 4,152 cases and 25 deaths.

Macoupin County reported 63 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 86 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 14,818 cases and 144 deaths.

Christian County reported 45 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 42 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,911 cases and 115 deaths.

Montgomery County reported 46 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 35 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,271 cases and 108 deaths.

Within Illinois, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Hardin County with 393 cases per 100,000 per week; Lawrence County with 313; and Lake County with 263. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Cook County, with 7,654 cases; Lake County, with 1,833 cases; and DuPage County, with 1,050. Weekly case counts rose in 20 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Cook, Lake and DuPage counties.

Across Illinois, cases fell in 78 counties, with the best declines in Will County, with 740 cases from 1,118 a week earlier; in Kane County, with 541 cases from 744; and in Champaign County, with 246 cases from 442. ​

In Illinois, 88 ​ people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 91 people were reported dead.

A total of 3,751,275 people in Illinois have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 39,624 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,070,980 people have tested positive and 1,056,416 people have died.

Illinois's COVID-19 hospital admissions staying flat

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, Sept. 25. Likely COVID patients admitted in the state:

  • Last week: 2,837
  • The week before that: 2,888
  • Four weeks ago: 3,153

  • Four weeks ago: 64,244

Hospitals in 13 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 20 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 25 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
