CLAYTON, N.C. — The town of Clayton said T.R. Lee Oil Company, Inc. is responsible for a 2,000-gallon kerosene oil spill in Johnston County over the weekend.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has issued a "precautionary" recreational water advisory while crews work to clean up the mess.

As of Monday afternoon, Clayton officials said crews are actively working to clean up the oil from Little Creek between Main Street to Lombard Street. That creek is not part of a water source, town officials said.

Town officials ask that if any locals see discolored water, sheen, or dead fish in the water near downtown Clayton to contact the town at 919-553-1530 or info@townofclaytonnc.org.

The state health department said people should avoid contact with the water and soil near the water.

Residents should also avoid fishing or wading in the creek until further notice.

If people do make contact with the water near Little Creek, they should thoroughly wash their skin with soap and water. The health department also recommends people contacting their health care provider.
