Raley’s CFO, chief pilot identified as those killed in plane crash in remote area of Sac County
The chief financial officer for Raley's and the company's chief pilot died after a small plane crashed in a remote area of Sacramento County on Sunday morning.The victims of the crash in Galt were identified as 56-year-old Kenneth Mueller of El Dorado Hills and 68-year-old Richard Conte of Orangevale.The Beech 58 plane crashed around 9 a.m. into an orchard near Christensen and Twin Cities roads, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Authorities told KCRA 3 that firefighters had to swim through a small body of water to reach the plane. Only Mueller and Conte were on board and both died at the scene of the crash, according to officials. Mueller was the CFO for Raley's, while Conte was their chief pilot, according to a statement from the organization that read, in part:We were notified by authorities of a plane crash involving two long-term Raley's team members, Ken Mueller, Chief Financial Officer and Richard Conte, Chief Pilot. Our organization is deeply saddened and heartbroken. At this time, we are focused on supporting their families, friends and our colleagues. An investigation is being handled by the regulatory agencies and we expect to learn more in the days and weeks ahead.Conte was also a Sacramento Police Department reserve pilot, according to the department. The police department released a statement that read, in part:Richard conducted examinations to certify our Air Operations personnel and also trained them on emergency procedures in the helicopter. Our condolences go out to Richard’s family and everyone else who had the privilege to know him. We will miss you, Richard.The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. It's unclear what led up to the crash.
