It’s time to saddle up the horse and head to Devore for a taste of the western lifestyle and the return of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Rodeo.

The rodeo started Friday, Sept. 23, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 25, at Glen Helen Regional Park in Devore. Gates open at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the event’s website.

Competitors certified by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association will take part in seven events including, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping and barrel racing.

This is the final weekend of the year to qualify for December’s Nationals Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, the sport’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. Some of the top riders and ropers in the world are scheduled to compete over the three-day event, including the extensive Wright family of rough stock riders from Milford, Utah.

The event will raise money for local youth organizations, with donations to be made to the Children’s Fund, Boy Scouts of America and the Golden Circle of Champions, according to a statement in the event’s program by San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus.

Friday and Saturday night’s events will be followed by live music by Jarett James & The County Line. James, who is from Wrightwood, said his small-town values inspire his singing and songwriting, through which he tries to capture the humble hunting and fishing, beer-drinking, farm-raised, mud-on-the-tires, church-on-Sunday way of life.
