Timeline for the new and improved Main Street Bridge in Bellevue
With the successful demolition of the old Main Street Bridge across Interstate 405 in Bellevue two weekends ago, Washington State Department of Transportation has shared its plans for the future of the project.
During the weekend of June 18 to 19, over 100 crew members demolished the 260-foot-long bridge in just 56 hours.
The old bridge, built in the 1960s, did not meet current design standards, with only a 4-foot-wide sidewalk on both sides and no bicycle lanes.
The new bridge will still have four lanes but will also have a 5-foot-wide bike lane, an 8-foot-wide sidewalk, a 12-and-a-half-foot-wide multi-use path, and a 6-foot-wide landscaped planter between the sidewalks and traffic.
The bridge will also look like existing structures around the I-405 corridor through Bellevue.
WSDOT said the new bridge will be closed for approximately five months as crews construct the new bridge.
After the closure, the new bridge will be partially open, with one lane of traffic open in each direction for 60 days as crews work to finish construction.
Additionally, pedestrians and bicyclists will not be able to use the bridge during this time.
