Day four of trial continued for Leland Hust, the Rio Rancho man accused of raping and killing a 6-year-old child in August 2018.
Prosecutors said on August 11, 2018, six-year-old Ariana "Jade" Romeo was found dead in a Rio Rancho home on Moonstone Drive wearing only a T-shirt.
Hust was arrested for the rape and killing of Jade.
During the fourth day of trial, prosecutors played a video recording of Hust talking to law enforcement on the day Jade was found murdered.
In the video, Hust emotionally said he went to sleep on August 10, 2018, and the next morning woke up to Jade's mother, Stephanie Romeo, screaming that her daughter was dead.
"Her face was purple. Why would her face be purple? It just keeps going through my head," Hust said in the video. "Why would anybody hurt her?"
Detectives and a sergeant with Rio Rancho Police were also called to testify about the investigation into the rape and killing of Jade.
The judge said the trial could last anywhere from seven to 10 days.
KOAT will continue to update this trial as more details become available.
Here’s a look back at what we know in this horrific case:
THE DISCOVERY:
On the morning of Aug. 11, 2018 Rio Rancho police responded to a home on Moonstone Drive where they found Ariana cold to the touch, not breathing and with blood near her buttocks.
According to police records when the officer arrived at the home he saw family standing in the front yard, emotional and crying.
When he went into the home he found emergency medical crews in the room with Ariana, who was lying on her back, wearing a T-shirt but nothing else.
The girl was lying on a foam mattress splattered with blood. Next to the mattress was a Playboy Magazine.
The medical crews told the officer that they had found blood on Ariana’s buttocks and confirmed that she was deceased. It was determined the time of death was the night before around 10 p.m.
When the officer exited the room he saw a man, later identified as the suspect, Leland Hust, coming out of another room inside the home. The officer told Hust to wait outside.
The officer said the home was very messy and smelled of a strong disturbing odor, but he was unclear of the exact cause of the smell.
The report said the officer then went outside and began to interview the family, waiting outside.
THE INVESTIGATION:
In the days after Ariana’s death, investigators told KOAT that several people had been at the home when the girl was killed, but did not name a suspect.
The Sandoval County Deputy District Attorney, Barbara Romo, at one point told KOAT that one reason there had yet to be an arrest was because they had learned from the mistakes they say Albuquerque police made in the Victoria Martens case.
While Rio Rancho police say the investigation is still ongoing on Friday they announced that they had finally made an arrest in the case.
WHO IS THE SUSPECT?
At this time very little is known about Hust. We know the responding officer saw him at the home that day, but do not know what, if anything, he told police that day.
However, according to a criminal complaint detectives interviewed Hust on August 23, 2018, Hust told detectives that he last saw Ariana the evening of August 10th when he put a movie on for the girl in her room. He denied having anything to do with her death and claimed he was sleeping when she was hurt.
That same complaint says laboratory results from the New Mexico State Crime Lab matched Hust’s DNA to DNA that had been found from the girl’s genital swabs.
According to a search of New Mexico court records, Hust has no criminal history in this state.
CAUSE OF DEATH:
A criminal complaint filed by police on Friday cited Office of the Medical Examiner autopsy findings that showed Romeo had bleeding in the neck area that are "consistent with signs of strangulation and or suffocation," according to the records.
The complaint also said Romeo had injuries consistent with sexual assault.
The OMI findings also said that apart from her injuries, Romeo was in good health.
WHO WAS ARIANA?
Ariana had just finished kindergarten at Ernest Stapleton Elementary and was set to start first grade a few days before her death.
Ariana and her mother, Stephanie Romeo, had moved to Rio Rancho after living in Carlsbad and before that Florida and Alabama.
KOAT spoke to a man who said he raised Ariana from the time she was 2 years old.
Billy Hudson dated Ariana’s mother and said the three lived together as a family for four years.
Hudson tells KOAT he called Ariana, Jady Bug.
“My little Jady Bug, I called her Jady Bug because it's like lady bug," Hudson said.
After news broke of Hust’s arrest Hudson thanked law enforcement.
"I do want to thank law enforcement. I know it seemed to take a lifetime to get this done but I know they had to make sure that everything was done right on their end and that way justice is properly served,” Hudson said.
He went on to say that Ariana gives him signs that she’s looking over him and shared this photo of a double rainbow that appeared the day of her funeral.
