AT EIGHT. TODAY, A REMODELED FOOD PANTRY OPENED AT FAMILIES IN TRANSITION AND MANCHESTER. IT NOW LOOKS AND FEELS LIKE A GROCERY STORE. THE DESIGN WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY A $50,000 DONATION FROM HANNAFORD. THE NONPROFIT SAYS MAKING THE FOOD PANTRY MORE LIKE A SUPERMARKET CREATES A MORE EXPERIENCE. IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, IT’S A PRETTY NEW MODEL. WE’VE HAD OTHER FOOD PANTRIES COME AND WANT TO SEE THE SPACE TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE IT’S A SHOPPING. LIKE PEOPLE LITERALLY HAVE A CART. THEY GO SHOPPING AROUND. VERY DIFFERENT THAN, YOU KNOW, REALLY GETTING IN A LONG LINE WITH A LARGE BOX. KIND OF TAKING WHAT’S GIVEN TO YOU AS OPPOSED TO HAVING CHOICE. IT’S AN INCREDIBLE POINT OF PRIDE. I MEAN, JUST TO HAVE PARTNERSHIPS, LIKE WE DO WITH FAMILIES IN TRANSITION AND TO SEE THE AMAZING WORK THEY’VE DONE HERE AT THE PANTRY TO CREATE A REALLY EMPATHETIC AND SUPPORTIVE SHOPPING ENVIRONMENT FOR FOLKS THAT TELL YOU REALLY NEED THAT. Updated Families in Transition pantry opened Wednesday

A remodeled food pantry opened Wednesday at Families in Transition in Manchester.The food pantry now looks and feels like a grocery store with a design made possible by a $50,000 donation from Hannaford.The nonprofit said making the food pantry more like a grocery store creates a more dignified experience.“In New Hampshire, it's a pretty new model. We've had other food pantries come and want to see the space to understand because it's shopping. People have a cart and they go shopping around, very different than you know getting in a line with a large box and taking what's given to you as opposed to having choice,” said Stephanie Savard, spokesperson for Families in Transition.“It's an incredible point of pride to have partnerships like we do with Families in Transition and to see the great work they've done here to create a very empathetic and supportive shopping environment for folks that really need that,” said John Fifield, director of operations for Hannaford in New Hampshire. More than 1,000 people and families visit the pantry every month.
