Officials have identified the armed woman who was shot and killed by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Friday in Round Rock after a traffic chase.

The DPS identified the woman as Angela Nuckols, 58, of Pflugerville. The department has not released the name of the trooper.

Round Rock police on Friday tried to stop Nuckols, who was driving a stolen gray Nissan Altima, but lost sight of the vehicle near the 7800 block of Interstate 35, according to a statement from the DPS.

A DPS trooper noticed the vehicle on the southbound access road of I-35 near Westinghouse Road and attempted to stop Nuckols, the statement says. Nuckols evaded the trooper, and the trooper began a pursuit.

Nuckols ultimately lost control of the Nissan and crashed into another vehicle on Old Settlers Boulevard, just west of I-35. The driver of the other vehicle did not suffer any major injuries, DPS officials said.

The vehicle Nuckols was driving came to rest in the grassy area on the south side of Old Settlers Boulevard, and Nuckols got out of the vehicle and "brandished" a firearm, DPS spokesman Sgt. Deon Cockrell said. The trooper then shot her.

Nuckols was pronounced dead at the scene, the DPS said. The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.

Cockrell said he is not aware of whether the trooper is on administrative leave.
