EASE COSTS. JIM: SO MANY FOLKS RIGHT NOW ARE STARTING TO GEAR UP, PICKING THAT PERFECT TURKEY WITH THANKSGIVING A LITTLE MORE THAN A WEEK AWAY, AND IT’S NO SECRET THAT PRICES ARE UP RIGHT NOW. WALKING THE AISLES OF YOUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE IT’S EASY THESE DAYS TO GET A SENSE OF STICKER SHOCK. >> MILK, EGGS, TURKEY, ALL THE BASIC ITEMS THAT YOU USE TO FEED YOUR FAMILY TO FEED THEM WENT UP. JIM: THAT INCLUDES THE THANKSGIVING TURKEYS, TOO. ACCORDING TO BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS, TURKEYS ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING ABOUT 17% MORE EXPENSIVE THAN LAST YEAR. >> I THINK EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THERE’S A SLIGHT INCREASE IN PRICES ACROSS THE BAORD THOUGH. WHILE THE PRICE THEY PAY FOR TURKEYS HAS GONE UP SIGINIFICANTLY, CHARLEY SAYS THEY’RE NOT PASSING THAT COST ON TO CUSTOMERS AS MUCH AS THEY CAN. >> TURKEY IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE MEAL. JIM: AS FOR THOSE FAVORITE SIDES , LIKE POTATOES AND OF COURSE THE PUMPKIN PIE, THE LEVEL OF INFLATION VARIES. Inflation continues to impact most products, including in the Pittsburgh region.

Picking out that perfect turkey will come with a bit of a higher price tag this year. According to the bureau of labor statistics, turkey prices are up 17% compared to last year and food prices overall are more than 12% higher than one year ago.Experts said the average cost for a meal for 10 people this year is $53 and only includes the basics."It's not lost on us that across the board there's been inflation and everyone knows about it," said Charley Family Shop'n Save co-owner Tom Charley.Heading into Thanksgiving, Charley said the impact of rising prices varies depending on the product. Charley said the company is absorbing some of the costs when it comes to rising turkey prices in order to keep prices down for customers, adding the cost per pound at the family's three Westmoreland County locations won't be that much different than one year ago."A turkey is a very important part of the meal and at least we could give back a little on that item, because we know the challenges that everyone is facing this year," Charley said.Nationally the price of potatoes and apples have dropped in recent weeks and so far experts are not expecting any shortages when it comes to traditional Thanksgiving staples. Canned fruit prices are among the items that have seen the largest increase in costs, up 18.6% this year.
