DRAGGING AN ORLANDO POLICE BIKE OFFICER DURING AN ATTEMPTED TRAFFIC STOP YESTERDAY WAS IN COURT TODAY. MICHELLE: THIS WAS JONATHAN SANCHEZ’S FIRST APPEARANCE. HE IS FACING NUMEROUS CHARGES. WESH 2’S KELSI THORUD JOINS US LIVE FROM THE ORANGE COUNTY JAIL. WHAT HAPPENED DURING THAT INITIAL APPEARANCE? KELSI THE JUDGE SET HIS BOND AT : JUST OVER 50,000 DOLLARS. HE IS BEING CHARGED WITH SEVERAL CRIMES, INCLUDING ATTEMPTED SECOND DEGREE MURDER. >> I DO FIND PROBABLE CAUSE ON COUNT ONE, ATTEMPTED SECOND DEGREE MURDER. KELSI: 36-YEAR-OLD JONATHAN SANCHEZ STOOD BEFORE A JUDGE FOR THE FIRST TIME THURSDAY FACING CHARGES OF BATTERY RESISTING AN OFFICER AND ATTEMPTED SECOND DEGREE MURDER. ACCORDING TO ORLANDO POLICE A BICYCLE OFFICER CAME INTO CONTACT WITH SANCHEZ AROUND 11:30 WEDNESDAY MORNING ON ORANGE AVENUE IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN ORLANDO. POLICE SAY THE OFFICER ATTEMPTED A TRAFFIC STOP BUT SANCHEZ REFUSED TO COOPERATE. THE TWO GOT INTO A PHYSICAL STRUGGLE, AND THAT’S WHEN POLICE SAY SANCHEZ GOT BACK INTO HIS CAR AND STARTED DRIVING AWAY, DRAGGING THE OFFICER WITH HIM. POLICE SAY SANCHEZ CRASHED HIS CAR INTO A TREE NOT FAR DOWN THE ROAD, THEN JUMPED OUT AND RAN AWAY. HE WAS ARRESTED NOT LONG AFTER. POLICE SAY THE OFFICER IS EXPECTED TO BE OK. SANCHEZ IS BEING HELD IN THE ORANGE COUNTY JAIL ON JUST OVER $50,000 BOND. >> ON COUNT ONE, I’LL SET BOND IN THE AMOUNT OF $50,000. An Orlando police officer is recovering after being dragged by a car downtown.The man accused of dragging the officer during an attempted traffic stop Wednesday was in court today. The judge set his bond at just over $50,000. The suspect in this case has been identified as Jonathan Sanchez, 36. He's being charged with several crimes, including attempted second-degree murder. "I do find probable cause on count one, attempted second-degree murder," a judge said. Sanchez stood before a judge for the first time on Thursday, facing charges of battery, resisting an officer and attempted second-degree murder.According to Orlando police, a bicycle officer came into contact with Sanchez around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning on North Orange Avenue in the heart of downtown Orlando.Police say the officer attempted a traffic stop but Sanchez refused to cooperate.The two got into a physical struggle and that's when police say Sanchez got back into his car and started driving away, dragging the officer with him.Police say Sanchez crashed his car into a tree not far down the road then jumped out and ran away.He was arrested not long after.Police say the officer is expected to be okay.Both Sanchez and the officer were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.Sanchez is being held in the Orange County Jail on $50,000 bond. "On count one I'll set bond in the amount of $50,000. I'm going to require that you have no contact with the victim," a judge said. "Yes ma'am," Sanchez said. We also learned during Thursday's hearing that Sanchez was previously convicted of second-degree murder in Broward County back in 2004.He was just 17 years old at that time and spent 15 years in prison, getting out just a few years ago in 2019.
