The Rock Reveals He's Lost Friends to Suicide: 'You Gotta Ask for Help'

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson may be the biggest and most recognizable movie star in the world, but he's never been shy about the fact that sometimes, just like the rest of us, he doesn't feel so great. "I think one of the defining, seminal moments in my life was when I really realized the power and the value of asking for help," he says in a new Men's Health cover interview.

That being said, the Black Adam star wasn't always so open. When he was growing up, he "would stuff things down and not talk about them," he explains. He adds that he's experienced first-hand the road things can go down if people don't communicate how they're feeling to their families, friends, and loved ones.

"I’ve lost friends, uh, who checked out and, yeah, ended their lives because they didn’t want to ask for help," he says. "Yeah. So you gotta communicate. You gotta ask for help. There’s no shame in that. If you don’t know something, ask. If you don’t know, ask."

The Rock, whose movie Black Adam was released in theaters last month and will hit HBO Max in December, has been open about his mental health in the past; in 2021 he discussed the first time he went and sought out help when he was feeling depression. In the Men's Health cover story, he compares his own experience to a trend he's noticed among fellow men. "As guys, we have a tendency to not ask for help," he says. "Ego gets in the way, and we start stuffing things deep down in our guts, which is not a good thing."
