One person was killed and a suspect was apprehended in connection with a shooting at Seattle’s Ingraham High School, police say.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Tuesday when police got word of shots fired at the school.

They arrived to find a victim with one gunshot wound. The person later died at Harborview Medical Center.

A suspect was arrested by Seattle Police and Washington State Patrol. Police would not give details about the suspect.

“They’re not smiling at all at Ingraham,” said Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell. “We need to keep our schools safe.

“There are far too many guns on the street,” Harrell continued. “We will continue to do everything we can to keep our teachers and students safe.”

“When one student can pick up a gun and shoot another student, there’s a problem,” Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz said. “We arrived within four minutes. Four minutes! It’s a problem when people go to school expecting to learn and they aren’t safe.”

All school activities have been canceled, according to the school district. Classes have also been canceled for tomorrow.

Police said the campus has been secured.

One parent told KIRO Newsradio’s Sam Campbell, “They texted us immediately. They said this wasn’t a drill and that someone had heard shots.”

Parents were reunited with students around noon.

A student at the school said, “We were sitting in the classroom for an hour and a half. We weren’t told anything. We weren’t allowed to leave the classroom,” he said. “Obviously, I did feel a little bit of fear, but I didn’t hear anything.”

Ingraham has about 1,500 students. Gov. Jay Inslee, an Ingraham High School graduate, responded on Twitter. “Thankful for Seattle Police being on the scene and helping to resolve this incident before the shooter had the chance to hurt more people. Our children should never have to experience this. We can and must do better by them.”
