BOARD. THE STATE OF IOWA WILL LOSE $30 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR CHILD CARE SERVICES IN SEPTEMBER. A FEDERAL AUTHORITIES MADE $266 MILLION AVAILABLE TO HELP STATES INVEST IN EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE. THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE TELLS THE IOWA CAPITAL DISPATCH THAT THE LOSS OF THAT MONEY IS A RESULT OF A DELIBERATE DECISION TO AVOID COMMITTING $3 MILLION IN MATCHING STATE FUNDS TOWARD CHILD CARE. STATE SENATOR CLAIRE KELSEY IS ON THE BOARD OF THE EARLY CHILDHOOD IOWA AND TELLS THE IOWA CAPITAL DISPATCH SHE BELIEVES THE STATE DID NOT REVIEW AND SUBMIT THE PAPERWORK ON TIME TO RECEIVE THE MONEY.

The state of Iowa will lose $30 million in federal funding for child care services. In September, federal authorities made $266 million available to help states invest in early-childhood care. The governor's office told the Iowa Capitol Dispatch the loss of that money is the result of a deliberate decision to avoid committing $3 million in matching state funds toward child care.State Sen. Claire Celsi is on the board for Early Childhood Iowa. She told the Iowa Capitol Dispatch she believes the state did not review and submit the paperwork on time to receive the money.Iowa did previously receive funding from the same program.Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, Gov. Kim Reynolds has approved more than $500 million in state and federal funding to increase access to child care across the state.
