Four students have been found dead at a university with police investigating the possibility they were murdered.

Homicide detectives are looking into the deaths of four University of Idaho students found dead in a home near the school campus on Sunday.

All four of the deceased at the converted apartment house were confirmed to be university students.

University President Scott Green said in a statement: "It is with deep sadness that I share with you that the university was notified today of the death of four University of Idaho students living off-campus believed to be victims of homicide."

The campus in Moscow, Idaho, in the US, has seen in person and online classes cancelled until Tuesday out of respect for the four 'Vandals', the nickname given to Idaho university students.

Green said: "An event of this magnitude can understandably have significant impacts on those left behind. As Vandals, we must come together and lift each other up."

After the deaths, people were initially advised to remain indoors for around an hour police worked to determine there was no present threat.

Bodies were discovered when police responded to a report of an unconscious person on King Road in Moscow, just before midday yesterday.

The fact that homicide detectives were assigned to the case does not necessarily mean the police think it was murder.

The term normally refers to the killing of one person by another, but this does not suggest intent.

"We are grateful for the support of the community and the ongoing efforts of the Police Department. The university is committed to supporting students and families during this difficult time," Green added.

The Moscow Police Department has appealed for information about the deaths.

Police said: "On November 13, 2022, at 11:58 hrs. Moscow Police Officers responded to a call on King Road for an unconscious individual. Upon arrival, officers discovered four individuals who were deceased.

"This is an ongoing investigation... The Moscow Police Department gives our heartfelt condolences to family members, friends and the Moscow community."

The Idaho tragedy comes amid more concerning news for university students in the US and the latest reports indicate that the e University of Virginia Police Department is still searching for a suspect following the deaths of three people.

Two more people were injured and the campus remains on lockdown as police try to locate a suspected shooter named as Chris Darnell Jones.

Reports say Jones was listed on the university's website in 2018 as an American football player.
