STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two men suffered horrific injuries in a crash where a car careened into two fences in Richmond early on Thursday morning, according to a sources.
The driver’s head was impaled on a wooden fence and his passenger lost an arm, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.
The 44-year-old driver was taken in critical condition with head trauma at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze. The 28-year-old passenger, who suffered an injury to his right arm, was transported to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, according to a spokeswoman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
The crash was reported at 12:34 a.m. at Arthur Kill Road and Richmond Hill Road, according to a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS.
The 44-year-old driver lost control of a black, Volkswagen SUV that was traveling northbound on Arthur Kill Road near the intersection of Richmond Hill Road and Richmond Road, according to the preliminary investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad.
The SUV collided with two fences at the location, according to the preliminary investigation.
Large holes were seen in the wooden fence on Arthur Kill Road and Richmond Road, with deep tire tracks embedded in the grass between the two openings. Posts and slats from the fence and car parts were among the debris scattered on the property of Historic Richmond Town.
Police are working to determine the cause of the crash.
