Plane skids off runway as wild weather blankets California

Thursday, December 6, 2018, 5:04 PM - A major storm moving eastward across California brought rain and flooding to lower elevations and heavy snow to the mountains on Thursday. Other areas have had to contend with mudslides.

HEAVY RAIN SENDS AIRPLANE SKIDDING OFF RUNWAY
On Thursday, Southwest Airlines Flight 278 slid to the end of the runway during landing in heavy rain at Hollywood Burbank Airport (Bob Hope Airport), prompting an evacuation of the aircraft.
"The plane rolled off the end of Runway 8 while landing at [Hollywood Burbank Airport] in Burbank and came to rest in the Engineered Material Arresting System,” The FAA said in a statement.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
“We are alive. The plane was a few feet from plowing thru the barrier and taking out numerous cars. Crazy stuff,” one Instagram user said.
MUD AND WATER POURS FROM CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINS, ONE DEAD
Debris from the recent Woolsey fire, as well as mud and water poured down the mountains above Malibu, California, prompting sporadic closures on the Pacific Coast Highway.
One man had to be rescued from his car after it became stuck in a mudflow on the highway.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts of the area, mainly due to water accumulating in the burn scars left behind by the Woolsey and Holy fires. The flood warning expired at 11 a.m.
In the Sun Valley region of Los Angeles, several highway lanes were shut down on NB I-5 at Hollywood Way after a vehicle overturned, resulting in one death.
SNOW CAUSES COLLISIONS, ROAD CLOSURES
Heavy snow caused several collisions in higher elevations and forced the closure of Interstate 5 over The Grapevine. About 10 cm of snow blanket the area -- enough to send cars sliding.
The California Highway Patrol reported multiple accidents on the steep stretch of highway over Tejon Pass, with local news reporting police had to escort some drivers over the treacherous mountain roads.
