The current water storage capacity in Bahrain will meet the demand until 2019, said a top government official, stressing the need to boost production capacity for commercial operations before 2020, through private sector or government funding.

Tap water in Bahrain is 100 per cent safe, Minister of State for Electricity and Water Affairs Dr Abdulhussain Mirza said yesterday (May 13). He, however, warned that excessive consumption could pose a serious threat to water supply in future.

“Water consumption per day per capita in Bahrain is currently estimated at 115 gallons,” he told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.

The maximum demand for water is expected to reach 160 million gallons per day this year, he said, adding the authority has achieved satisfactory levels of production capacity of about 205 million gallons per day and an average salinity ranging between 800 and 1,500mg/litre. – TradeArabia News Service
